Time For Bed

The novel centers on Gabriel Jacoby, a young, unemployed man plagued by chronic insomnia and a complicated desire — he is in love with Alice, his brother Ben’s happily married wife. Gabriel’s life is in disarray; his surroundings and relationships are breaking down, from his faltering old car to his somewhat rudderless existence shared with his balding flatmate Nick in Kilburn. Gabriel’s obsession with Alice dominates his thoughts, yet the story takes a twist when he turns his attention to Alice’s sister Dina, who comes from the States and becomes romantically involved with him. The narrative culminates with Gabe attempting to find Dina when she returns to America after discovering she is pregnant.
